Our Journey & Impact

Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca was founded in 2000 by Rev. José María Briones with the vision of creating a cultural space where children and youth could learn, grow, and express pride in Mexican folkloric dance. What began as a small initiative has grown into a lasting artistic legacy rooted in tradition, discipline, and community.

Under the direction of Joel Botello and Andrew Ball, Sol Azteca has expanded its artistic reach and community presence, becoming recognized in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as one of the most impactful groups dedicated to sharing Mexican traditions and culture. The group’s teachings emphasize family unity, teamwork, and personal growth, nurturing dancers both on and off the stage.

Over the years, more than 400 individuals have been part of Sol Azteca, forming a multigenerational dance family connected by shared purpose and cultural pride. The group has performed on major stages within and beyond Oklahoma, including Wonders of México and a Disney showcase in Orlando, Florida, and has received recognition at competitions such as the Texas competition in Corpus Christi.

Today, Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca continues to honor its roots while looking forward—preserving tradition, inspiring new generations, and keeping Mexican folkloric dance alive through movement, music, and community.

A Living Community

Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca is more than just a dance company—we are a living community that preserves, teaches, and celebrates Mexican culture through movement. Our work honors tradition while creating space for growth, education, and belonging for dancers of all ages and backgrounds. We strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone can learn and share their passion for Mexican folk dance.

Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca is brought to life by dedicated dancers, instructors, families, and volunteers who share a deep love for Mexican culture and a strong commitment to learning, discipline, and community. Our dancers range in age and experience, but they are united by respect for tradition, a willingness to work hard, and a genuine desire to grow—both as artists and as individuals.

We hope to welcome people who are curious, passionate, and open-hearted—those who may be new to folklórico as well as those with experience. We value dancers and supporters who are eager to learn, who show up with commitment and humility, and who believe in teamwork, cultural pride, and mutual support. At Sol Azteca, we are not just building dancers; we are building a family rooted in respect, resilience, and shared purpose.
